Throughout this project I intend to investigate Mobility Design, identify and address the limitations and capabilities of people with musculoskeletal disorders and to conceptualise, design, develop, validate a user -specific mobile product solution.

Through understanding impairment mobility patterns can modern technologies help break down the barriers and restrictions placed upon people with physical limitations?

To explore this user-centred design methods will be implemented, including understanding user perceptions through observation surveying and further analysis, with the users needs driving the form and function of the design the aim is to eliminate all non-essential forms, features or concepts through prototyping and first hand experience. This will be used to further evaluate and test design solutions.

Currently 10.1% of all people suffer from a form of mobility impairment. The area I will be focusing this project on will be people with mild to moderate physical disabilities experienced on a daily basis. This includes people who require walking aids and equipment, cannot easily walk 200 metres and cannot easily bend to pick up an object from the floor. With these physical restrictions it makes living a normal life quite difficult. There are devices/technologies available on the market highlighting that aids significantly enhance the quality of living and sense of independence. While these mobility aids are useful they do have many limitations including their size, weight, adaptability to different terrains etc.

An opportunity for design exists in highly compact, lightweight mobility aids for easy transportation and manoeuvrability, designing for the user to positively increasing the user’s experience and way of life. Engaging in this question will require qualitative and quantitative research methods such as critical thinking; user/focus group analysis, as there is a need to establish a first-hand understanding of what people with mobility limitations experience.

The aim of undertaking this project is to develop a critical solution that features a well-resolved outcome using a multidisciplinary approach to incorporate human factors and ergonomics relevant to the user. Creating an outcome that addresses the users capabilities and limitations providing an elegant, intuitive and secure outcome in a variety of environmental platforms.
